The program

This multimedia training program covers a typical basic laparoscopic operation.

The program should lead the trainee on to other laparoscopic operations.

The program is based on a Pantogen Surgical Script.

This type of script aims to provide all the information that an expert surgeon uses when operating.

The program goes further than a Pantogen script, by providing additional background and reference

information for the trainee.

Trainees may find that, in their own operating suites, practically all the equipment, materials

and practices will differ to some degree from those in this program.

This is because the equipment, materials and techniques used in laparoscopic surgery are evolving

rapidly.

The trainee should be prepared to adapt the information presented in this program to suit.

Laparoscopic surgery

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is an excellent example of the successful application of new

technology to an old operation.

The new technology involves operating using a 2 dimensional screen to observe a 3 dimensional

operation.

There is, in addition, a very large range of new and complex equipment to learn, compared with an open operation.

Time spent in mastering, checking, and rehearsing unfamiliar equipment before an operation starts is time saved and possibly lives

saved during the procedure.

The surgeon should be expert in using the off-table equipment as well as the on-table equipment.

Relying on other operating theatre staff can be very disappointing.

The next 2 articles list some of the advantages and disadvantages of laparoscopic operations compared with the open method.
